Afghans in a UAE facility are “suffering psychologically,” a refugee from Canada said

According to participants speaking to media, Afghans in a temporary camp for refugees in the United Arab Emirates protested this week about the ambiguity surrounding their legal status. One refugee who is currently residing in Canada claimed they are “psychologically hurting.”

Since fleeing Afghanistan after the Taliban took control last year, residents of the camp, known as Emirates Humanitarian City, have been held there as they wait to be transferred to another nation.

Some of the 2,000–3,000 Afghan refugees housed in the facility held demonstrations this week to demand clarity on their future, according to two Afghans in the camp who spoke to Reuters on Tuesday. After receiving a resettlement progress update from the government, the protests were suspended. Reuters was unable to ascertain whether any assurances were made.

Ahmad Sadam Siam Panah, one of the approximately 1,500 Afghans that Canada has consented to resettle from the camp at the United States’ request, left the UAE facility at the end of September in order to go to Canada.

Panah, 24, expressed his appreciation for what the UAE has done for Afghan refugees but expressed concern for those who were still housed there.

“They have mental health issues. psychologically distressed, the majority of them had fantasised about working for Afghanistan… The dream for now, nevertheless, is to leave the camp.”

According to the UAE, which informed media that 85% of the approximately 17,000 Afghans who had been living in the camp had been relocated, it offers accommodation, food, medical treatment, education, and counselling.

According to an Emirati official, “The UAE continues to cooperate with the U.S. Embassy to process travellers and coordinate with American counterparts in efforts to resettle the remaining evacuees in a timely way as per the original arrangement.”
