On June 28, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences asked actors Suriya (Jai Bhim and Soorarai Pottru) and Kajol (My Name Is Khan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, among others) to serve on an Oscar panel of 397 eminent movie personalities. They are among 53 invitees from countries other than the United States.
According to sources, the 2022 invitees include 71 Oscar nominations and 15 winners, with 44 percent of them being women and 37 percent coming from marginalised areas. According to the website, the diversity initiative, which began in 2016, aimed to quadruple the participation of women and marginalised cultures by 2020. The number of members has surpassed 10,000 as a result of the new nominations.
Suriya, one of Tamil cinema’s highest-paid stars, has frequently chosen topics that fall beyond the success formula of action films. Jai Bhim, which was aired on an OTT platform in November 2021, was generally lauded for its concept, and many critics commended it as one of the finest movies of 2021. It was one of 276 films that participated in the Oscar race but did not receive a nomination.
A film industry insider stated, “The problem is that when there are so many English movies, a movie from another language competing in the main category will hardly be reviewed by the members who rate the movies.” Jai Bhim, in his opinion, did not compete in the proper category and hence could not make an impression. According to him, there is a need to grasp how Oscar nominations operate and how to play to India’s cinematic strengths.
