Two sections of the finial had fallen, while another was still on the top, according to Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid.
On Monday, a hot and humid afternoon in Delhi-NCR was followed by a violent thunderstorm, hail, and strong winds in the evening, uprooting scores of trees and damaging a portion of the Jama Masjid. The piece on the roof that is still there is slanted and stuck. If it falls, pieces of the wall in front of it may be dragged down with it. Stones also dropped in several areas.
“Three persons were hurt,” he explained. According to him, the finial is roughly 10 to 12 feet tall and is as old as the masjid.
“Because they have the competence, only ASI will be able to restore this.” “We’ve written to the ASI’s DG, requesting that a team be sent to rectify it,” he stated. Last year, stones from the masjid’s minaret had fallen in a storm, and seepage had caused breaches in the northern dome.
Because of the enormous trees that fell during the storm, some highways had to be temporarily closed, and traffic bottlenecks continued for hours throughout the capital.
The Safdarjung meteorological observatory, which serves as a marker for the city, reported 17.8 mm of rain between 2.30 and 5.30 p.m., which the India Meteorological Department classifies as “moderate” (IMD). The Lodhi Road weather station received 20 mm of rain and hail, while the Ridge in North Delhi received 15 mm. The lowest quantity, 0.4 mm, was recorded at the Palam observatory on Monday evening.
At the Safdarjung weather observatory, winds gusted to over 100 kmph, while the Palam weather observatory reported a speed of roughly 70 kmph.
