The dinosaur’s fossilised remains were discovered in the city of Pompal in 2017, when a resident discovered pieces of the animal during renovations on his land.
The dinosaur was discovered in August by Portuguese and Spanish palaeontologists, who think it is a sauropod, which were herbivorous, four-legged animals with long necks and tails.
Around 150 million years ago, during the Upper Jurassic period, they were alive. “It is not usual to find all the ribs of an animal like this, let alone in this position, maintaining their original anatomical position”, according to Elisabete Malafaia, a post-doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
“This mode of preservation is relatively uncommon in the fossil record of dinosaurs, in particular sauropods, from the Portuguese Upper Jurassic.”
The skeleton was 82 feet long and 39 feet high. Currently, a global study team is examining the remains. This discovery follows the discovery a month ago of two sauropod dinosaur footprints in a restaurant patio in southwest China that date back around 100 million years.
