On Saturday, Russia successfully test-fired a hypersonic Zircon cruise missile over a distance of nearly 1,000 kilometres (625 miles), according to the defence ministry.
According to the report, the missile was launched from the Barents Sea and hit a target in the White Sea. The missile was fired from a ship and blazed into the sky on a steep trajectory, according to video given by the ministry.
The Zircon, according to President Vladimir Putin, is part of a new generation of unrivalled weapons systems. Russia has conducted numerous test-launches of the Zircon from warships and submarines in the past year. Hypersonic missiles can travel at nine times the speed of sound. Despite massive losses in soldiers and equipment during its three-month invasion of Ukraine, which it refers to as a “special operation,” Russia’s military has continued to undertake high-profile weapons tests to remind the world of its missile capabilities.
It test-fired the Sarmat, a new nuclear-armed intercontinental missile capable of delivering ten or more warheads and targeting the United States, last month.
