According to information, Bilkis Bano’s plea for a reconsideration of the Supreme Court’s earlier decision was dismissed, the Gujarat government was advised to take into account the requests for the remission of sentences of 11 prisoners in the gang-rape case.
Bilkis Bano was the victim of gang rape and seven members of her family were killed during the riots in Gujarat in 2002. As per the procedures, the judges who took part in the Supreme Court decision under review will decide appeals in chambers.
Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath’s panel took the review request under discussion in chamber on December 13. The Supreme Court assistant registrar wrote to Bilkis Bano’s lawyer Shobha Gupta with the following instruction: “I am ordered to advise you that the appeal petition previously stated, filed in Supreme Court was rejected.”
A review of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding a convict’s guilty plea on May 13 had been requested by the victim of a gang rape. The top court had asked the state government to take into consideration the state’s plea for the convicts’ early release in accordance with its policy of July 9, 1992.
Further, which mandated the state government to make a decision on a remission request within two months. All 11 of the convicts received pardons from the Gujarati government, and they were all released on August 15,.
