Chinese-Canadian Pop Star Kris Wu Gets 13 Years Jail Term For Raping Minor

According to information, Kris Wu, a former pop singer who is Chinese-Canadian, was convicted guilty of rape and given a 13 years prison term by a Chinese court on Friday. This follows a scandal that sparked indignation on a global scale.

Wu was given a sentence of “11 years and six months of jail for rape” and further “was also sentenced to jail time of one year and ten months for the offence of collecting individuals to commit adultery”, as stated by the court in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. He will serve his 13 years term, the judge said, before being sent away.

Wu first gained notoriety as a member of the K-pop boyband EXO before leaving the group in 2014 to pursue a prosperous solo career as a actor, model, variety show judge and singer. Wu endured a barrage of public condemnation after a 19 years old student named Du Meizhu accused him of raping her on a date when she was 17.

And as a result, luxury companies withdrew their agreements with him. More alleged victims have now come forward online, accusing Wu’s staff of engaging in predatory behaviour, including inviting them to inebriated karaoke parties, in response to those charges.

The incident is reminiscent of the #MeToo movement in China, that saw a rise in women coming forward to report instances of sexual harassment in 2018, often involving well-known public personalities.
