Benjamin Netanyahu Makes a Comeback, PM Modi Congratulates

Benjamin Netanyahu has made a stunning comeback after spending 17 months in Opposition. When about 96% votes were counted, his coalition, including the extremist Religious Zionism and Ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism is sure to win 65 seats to form a government in the 120-member Knesset.

Israel’s Prime Minister Yasir Lapid congratulated on Thursday his rival Benjamin Netanyahu on his “victory”, conceding defeat two days after the country went to the polls.

“Prime Minister Lapid congratulated Opposition leader Netanyahu on his victory in the elections, and updated him that he has instructed his entire office to prepare an organised transition of power,” a statement from Lapid’s office said.

Israel’s longest serving Prime Minister, Netanyahu, was ousted last year when Lapid and other Opposition leaders formed a cross-ideology coalition. But the coalition government, led by Yamina Party’s Bennett, suddenly fell apart, pushing the country into its fifth election since 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu, who won the Israel general elections. Modi tweeted in Hebrew and said, “I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to deepen the strategic partnership between India and Israel.”
