While probing the Morbi suspension bridge collapse that claimed 135 lives, officials said that the weight of the bridge increased due to four-layered aluminium sheets of the new flooring. The flooring of the bridge was replaced but the cable was not placed and so it could not bear the heavy load of people.
The renovation work of the 143-year-old structure was given to Oreva group by Morbi Municipality. The company also renovated the bridge in 2007. The company is known for making clocks and e-bikes.
Nine persons are arrested in connection with the Morbi bridge collapse that claimed 135 lives on Sunday were presented in the court on Tuesday. The court was also informed by the prosecution that the company was not qualified for the job. Two managers of Oreva and two sub-contractors who carried out the recent repair are among those arrested.
Sources said the contractor had been given time until December to complete the renovation, but the reopening was advanced to coincide with Diwali and Gujarat New Year. The contractor seems to have just polished and painted all the cables ahead of its reopening on October 26.
Congress leader P Chidambaram tweeted, “48 hours after the Morbi tragedy, why is the Gujarat government and the BJP not answering basic questions? Why were the owners of the Oreva company and the municipal authorities not named in FIR ?”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site and also met with family members of the victims. He reviewed the situation and asked to conduct an extensive inquiry to identify all aspects of the tragedy.
