China on Wednesday put a hold on a proposal by India and USA at United Nations to blacklist Pakistan-based LeT terrorist Hafiz Talah Saeed, son of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed. This is the second such move by China within two days.
For the fifth time since June this year, China has blocked a US-India proposal for a UN ban on a Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. A day before, China also defended and avoided the listing of Shahid Mahmood – known for facilitating LeT in fundraising and other supports by US.
Hafiz Talha Saeed is a very important leader of terror group LeT and who is also son of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed. In April, this year, he was declared a terrorist by the Indian government.
Home Ministry informed that Hafiz Talha Saeed has been actively involved in recruitment, fund collection and planning and executive attacks by the Lashkar-e-Taiba in India and Indian interests in Afghanistan. He has been actively visiting various LeT centres across Pakistan and also propagating for Jihad against India, Israel, US and Indian interests in other western countries.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, in September, addressed a high-level UN General Assembly session and said that “the United Nations responds to terrorism by sanctioning its perpetrators”. He added, terrorism should not be used as a political tool and the idea that something is blocked without assigning a reason challenges common sense.
China is showing a “double standard” in the global war against terrorism. The latest block to save Hafiz Talah Saeed came at a time when UN Security-General Antonio Gutteres is in India and also payed homege to the victims of 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
