President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday. Justice Chandrachud will succeed the Chief Justice of India U.U Lalit on November 9.
The Chief Justice of India Lalit has a short tenure of just 74 days and will demit office on attaining the age of 65 years, on November 8. Justice Chandrachud is going to have a tenure of two years till November 10, 2024.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November,2022”.

Last week, law minister Kiren Rijiju asked the CJI to suggest names as his successor as per the norms and procedure. CJI Lalit had recommended Justice Chandrachud’s name as his successor since he is the senior-most Supreme Court Judge.
Justice Chandrachud, before stepping into the top court, served as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and he also served as a Judge of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Chandrachud is know as ‘safety valve‘ of democracy. His judgments are remarkable and historic which includes:
* Decriminalising same-sex relations (section 377 of the IPC)
* Validating of Aadhaar Scheme
* Allowing women to enter Sabarimala Temple
* The scope of Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act for married and unmarried
* Ayodhya land case
* Recognising right to privacy as a fundamental right
Justice Chandrachud is the son of the longest serving Chief Justice of India Y.V. Chandrachud who was the head of the apex court from 1978 to 1985.
