Rift between Delhi and Haryana over Delhi water crises

Delhi, the capital of the country, is currently facing a double whammy of heat and water scarcity. And the falling water level of Yamuna has added to the concern. And on this issue, there is tension between Delhi and Haryana.

On this Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain said that

the water coming from Haryana in Yamuna river of Delhi should be 674.5 feet, which has reduced to 669 feet. Due to this there is a problem of water in Delhi. I will ask Haryana to release all the water as per our agreement.

In response to this, Manohar Lal Khattar, the Chief Minister of Haryana, has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi of playing petty politics over water sharing. On Friday, Khattar remarked that if Delhi needed more water, Punjab should first be requested to release Haryana’s portion of the water.

The Delhi government sent an SOS (emergency) call to Haryana a few days ago, begging it to release extra water into the Yamuna river to relieve the capital’s water crisis.

According to Khattar, Haryana is fully complying with the Supreme Court’s water-sharing agreement with Delhi, releasing more than 1,049 cusecs of Yamuna water to Delhi every day. He stated that we cannot deny Haryana its fair share of water and cannot give Delhi more water than it is entitled to.

He added, Instead of playing petty politics over water, CM Khattar believes the Delhi government should convince the Punjab government to provide water from Haryana’s legal share as soon as possible. I promise that on the same day that Punjab gives our share, Haryana will increase Delhi’s existing water share.

He claimed that while Haryana is experiencing water scarcity, Delhi is receiving its fair share of water. He said that whenever the Delhi Jal Board has approached the Supreme Court and the High Court, it has been proved that Haryana is releasing more than 1049 cusecs of water from Moonak Headworks to Delhi against its share of 719 cusecs, but the Delhi government is wrong. Unfortunately, he is engaging in petty politics by using arguments.

He stated that the Delhi government should understand that meeting their drinking water needs is not solely Haryana’s responsibility. She can also contribute to the creation of water management plans.

According to Khattar, the state has experienced a power shortage of up to 1800 MW in recent days. Electricity demand is currently 700 to 800 lakh units higher than last year. Currently, the state’s maximum demand is 9874 MW, while the power supply is also 9874 MW. We have been able to supply electricity that is equal to consumption since May 16. Adani’s units have also begun receiving 600 MW of power, with the possibility of receiving even more. Khedar Unit-2 is expected to provide an additional 600 MW of power by May 30. Similarly, 26 MW of solar and wind power has become available, with 127 MW of solar power to become available by June 15. To meet the power requirement for paddy transplantation, 300 MW of power has been arranged from Jammu and Kashmir.

And in the midst of all this, the people are getting helpless and upset. CM Arvind Kejriwal has to find a solution to this problem as soon as possible.
