In recent times, ICC has declared Mankad a law and a legal action taken by a bowler against a non-striker if found faulty. The ICC said, if a batsman leaves the crease before a bowler releases the ball, the bowler may stop his action, hit the stumps and appeal for run-out at non-stiker end if batsman is out of crease. By making Mankad a law, ICC has done justice to bowlers because batsman used to take the advantage specially in a high profile and tight match for a quick single. The two updated laws or rules from ICC to favour the bowlers are: Mankad and New batsman will take the strike after a wicket.
Why is Mankad in news nowadays?
The Mankad is in news nowadays because on September 24, in the third and final ODI between India and England, when the match was very tight and India needed just a wicket to win, Deepti Sharma did Mankad to Charlie Dean. Although England was 9-down, they might had have won the match due to wonderful last wicket partnership of Charlie Dean and F. Daves. It was the farewell game for veteran Jhulan Goswami, but that match will also be remembered for that Mankad controversy which started Twitter war among legends of cricket and current players. Deepti Sharma noticed that Dean was leaving the crease early for quick singles and strike, she smartly did Mankad and appealed for run-out. In post match presentation, India captain Kaur said, the wicket was fair and very much under the ICC law book. In Mankad, it is upto the bowler and the captain to whether appeal or just give a warning to Non-striker, here umpires don’t have much to decide.
India women won an One-day International series on English soil after 23 years, 3-0.
If Mankad is an ICC law then what is the problem if someone does so. If a batsman tries to take advantage by leaving the crease early, why not the bowler can stop him? In a fair game, no-one is given advantage and so Mankad is in favour of bowlers. There shouldn’t be any mercy in this. If something is an law and everyone knows it, warning shouldn’t be given, once found faulty. The law was very much known to Dean and she was consciously leaving the crease for advantage. Deepti Sharma didn’t do anything out of law and so there is no question for argument.
‘Mankad’ came from Indian International player name – Vinoo Mankad. He did the run-out against Bill Brown of Australia in 1947 in a test match.
One shouldn’t forget 2019 Men’s World Cup (England and New Zealand) when the Champion team was declared on boundary counts. Cricket is a game of runs and wickets, it doesn’t matter who has hit how many boundaries, what matters at last is the score. If a World Cup winner can be on boundary counts for which a team never plays, then why can’t a bowler do Mankad under ICC law, if the batsman is taking repeated advantage to win the game.
Inches matters in Cricket: * Dhoni was run-out in IPL Final against Mumbai Indians 2018 * Dhoni was run-out against New Zealand in World Cup Semi-final 2019 – time knows results could had been something else. There are still many topics left in Cricket for debates, one of them is Umpire’s call in Decision Review System.
