After a calm night, the Kyrgyz-Tajik truce mainly holds

No significant nighttime incidents were recorded by Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan on Saturday, suggesting that the ceasefire reached following fierce fighting on Friday was still in effect, however Kyrgyz border guards said a village was briefly shelled.

This week, there was fighting between the two former Soviet republics over a border issue. Both sides claimed the other was attacking nearby communities with tanks, mortars, rocket artillery, and assault drones.

The Soviet Union attempted to partition Central Asia into groupings, whose settlements were frequently mixed in with those of other nationalities. This led to many of the boundary disputes in the region today.

After an otherwise peaceful night, one border village was shelled by mortars for five minutes early on Saturday, according to Kyrgyzstan, which on Friday reported 24 fatalities and scores of injuries.

Tajikistan has not released any official death toll figures, but according to security sources, at least seven people died on Friday. In a statement released on Friday, Tajik border guards said that Kyrgyz helicopters and drones had attacked multiple Tajik villages.

According to Tajik security sources, negotiations to end the crisis between the heads of state security on both sides continued on Saturday.
