According to reports, The Supreme Court postponed the hearing of several petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, on Monday. September 19 has been designated as the new hearing date. A court made up of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Chief Justice of India UU Lalit was hearing at minimum 220 petitions against the CAA.
Supreme Court conducted its initial hearing On CAA :
The Supreme Court had conducted its administrative hearing just on arguments raised against the CAA on December 18, 2019. After the bill was adopted by the Parliament on December 11, 2019, protests spread around the country.
The CAA will go into force on January 10, 2020. Some of the parties who have petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the statute include a number of NGOs, law students, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Mahua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress. In addition further, they also include Jairam Ramesh of the Congress, Asaduddin Owaisi of the AIMIM, and Debabrata Saikia of the Congress.
In 2020, the Kerala government petitioned the Supreme Court, becoming the first State to challenge against the CAA. The rule speeds up the citizenship procedure for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who fled persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh on or before December 31, 2014 and sought refuge in India.
The Supreme Court had previously cautioned the Centre and refused to issue a provisional injunction suspending the laws without first obtaining the Centre’s approval.
