Forces fighting the central government in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region for nearly two years declared on Sunday that they are prepared for a ceasefire and would accept an African Union-led peace process.
The Tigrayan troops issued a statement saying, “We are ready to abide by an immediate and mutually agreed cessation of hostilities.”
The statement added that Tigray has organised a negotiation team that is prepared to be sent out “without delay.” In June, the federal government of Ethiopia stated that the African Union ought to promote peace negotiations.
Legesse Tulu, a spokesman for the Ethiopian government, did not respond to a request for comment almost away. The government has already stated that it is ready to start talks with no requirements.
Since November 2020, Tigrayan troops have been at war with Ethiopia’s central government. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been charged by the Tigrayan forces with consolidating power at the expense of Ethiopia’s regions, which Abiy has refuted.
The Tigrayan forces, commanded by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which once controlled national politics, have been accused by Abiy of attempting to retake power; however, they have denied this.
The Tigrayan statement stated that the next stage was to “finalise a comprehensive negotiated ceasefire and an all-inclusive political dialogue to tackle concerns underlying the current conflict.” General Tsadkan Gebretinsae and TPLF spokesman Getachew Reda, according to the report, are members of the negotiating team.
Prior to beginning negotiations, the TPLF had previously stated that it desired free access to services including banking and telephone communications as well as humanitarian supplies.
Millions have been displaced by the fighting in northern Ethiopia, and thousands have died. Last month, fighting there resumed after a months-long ceasefire.
