In India’s final Super 4 match of the ongoing Asia Cup on Thursday at Dubai International Stadium, star batsman Virat Kohli finally ended the wait for his 71st international century by scoring his first T20I century. He then played an unbroken performance of 122 runs off just 61 balls against Afghanistan.
Rohit Sharma was rested for this match, a dead rubber, therefore Kohli was brought out to open the batting with acting captain KL Rahul. Rahul and Kohli’s opening partnership of 119 runs included Rahul’s 62 runs off 41 balls.
In a post-game press conference, KL Rahul was questioned by a reporter about whether Kohli can be considered an opening batter after his performance against Afghanistan and his IPL performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore in that position. Rahul answered, “Toh kya mai khud beth jaun? (So what? Should I sit out?)” to the question.
Rahul continued by saying that Kohli needed to rediscover his rhythm for the team, but he could also contribute from third base. As a team, it’s crucial for every player to get time in the middle, according to Rahul. “Obviously, Virat scoring runs is a huge bonus for the team, and the way he played today against Afghanistan, I know he is very very pleased with how he batted. He has been working on his game and that worked beautifully today.
