Priti Patel steps down as Home Secretary after Liz Truss becomes new PM

When Liz Truss formally assumes the position of prime minister of the United Kingdom, Priti Patel, the Home Secretary or interior minister, stated on Monday that she will step down.

Her resignation comes shortly after it was announced that Truss would succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party. On Tuesday, Truss will start his new job.

In her letter of resignation to the current prime minister, Boris Johnson, which she uploaded on Twitter, Patel said, “I congratulate Liz Truss on being chosen our new Leader, and will give her my support as our next Prime Minister.”

Once Liz officially takes office and a new Home Secretary is appointed, “I have decided to continue serving the country and the Witham constituency from the backbenches.”
