WHY IN NEWS?
The Gujrat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation {GCMMF}, which markets its dairy products under the Amul brand said in the statement that new prices are effective from August 17.
Amul announced an across-the-board Rs2 in the increase in the price of its Gold, Shakti, and Taaza brands of Milk.
WHICH CITY IN INDIA DOES MILK RETAIL THE CHEAPEST?
The local dairy cooperatives in those 2 cities known by their “Aavin” and “Vijaya” in Kerala, brands respectively are marketing toned milk at Rs.40 and Rs.52 per liter and full cream milk at Rs.48 and Rs.66 per liter respectively.
The city where the milk is least cheap in India in Bengaluru. In the IT capital or Silicon Valley of India, consumers get “Nandini” [The brand of Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, KMF] toned and full cream milk for only Rs.38 and Rs.46 per liter respectively.
The BJP Govt “Yeduyurappa” started giving Rs.2 per liter incentive to farmers for the milk they supplied to the KMF- Affiliated Dairy (2008). Further, “Siddaramaiah– led Congress Govt doubles the incentive and raised it Rs.5 per liter (2013), then “Yeduyurappa” was back with Rs.6 liter (2019).
DAIRY SECTOR IN INDIA
Dairy is the single largest agri-commodity in India. It contributes 5% of the National Economy and employ 8 million dairy farmers directly.
India is ranked 1st in Milk Production contributing 23% of Global Milk Production. The milk in the country has grown at a compound annual growth rate of about 6.2% to reach 209.9 tonnes in 2020-21 from 146.31 million tonnes in 2014-15.
A revival of economic activities, increasing per capita, consumption of milk and milk products gave rising to urbanization in India has uplifted the dairy Dairy Industry to grow 9-11% in 2021-22.
INITIATIVES TAKEN IN 2022-23 BUDGET
It has allocated Rs.6407.31 crore for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. 44% for dairy and the remaining for other Departments.
New Vibrant Villages Program: 95% of livestock farmers are concentrated in Rural Areas
Reduction in Taxes: Reduced Alternate minimum tax and surcharge reduction for cooperative societies from 18% to 15%.
Allocation of Rastriya Gokul Mission and National Program: Expected to help I increasing the productivity of indigenous cattle and quality milk production.
One Health Mission: implementation of 60% of enhancement in fund allocation for Livestock Heath and Disease Control in 2022-23.
