The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the private company KPIT Limited constructed India’s first domestically produced hydrogen fuel cell bus , giving the Aatmanirbhar Bharat project and its efforts to combat climate change a significant boost. The bus was on display in Pune after being unveiled by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
The fuel cell bus may be the most environmentally beneficial mode of transportation because it uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the vehicle and produces only water as waste. For contrast, there are over a million diesel buses operating on long distance routes in India, and each one emits an average of 100 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Additionally, fuel cell vehicles emit no greenhouse gases.
PM Narendra Modi’s hydrogen vision is crucial for India to provide Atmanirbhar means of affordable and accessible clean energy, fulfilling climate change goals, and creating new entrepreneurs and employment, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh (Union Minister of State for Science and Technology).
Green hydrogen, he continued, “is a fantastic clean energy vector that permits deep decarbonization of difficult-to-abate emissions from the refining business, fertiliser industry, steel industry, cement industry, as well as from the heavy commercial transportation sector.“
It is important to note that hydrogen fuel cell trucks have lower operating costs than diesel-powered trucks, which could lead to a revolution in the nation’s freight industry.
“The 12–14% of CO2 emissions are from big diesel-powered cars. Vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells are a great way to get rid of roadside pollutants in this industry “he observed.
