Assam Shuts Down Internet To Prevent Malpractice In State Recruitment Exams

In order to avoid cheating or the leakage of question papers during written examinations for the appointment of government jobs, the Assam government on Sunday cut down mobile internet access for 4 hours in 24 of the 35 districts in the state.

Over 1.4 million applicants are anticipated to apply for the approximately 30,000 Grade III and Grade IV positions in various government agencies that are being recruited for by the state’s BJP-led administration.

More than 500,000 applicants showed up for written exams on Sunday for Grade III postings in 48 government entities. 1,036 centres were used to administer the exams. For two rounds of assessment, mobile internet services were suspended from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 4pm. Additionally, district administrations enforced Section 144 of the CrPC in every district where the exams were held.

On August 28, when written exams for Grade IV employment will be administered, similar restrictions will be put in place. On September 11, the state government will conduct another set of examinations for the job of drivers, although no additional measures have yet been declared.

I would like to apologise to the public for the inconvenience. But while mobile internet will be closed, wired internet will be available. It is important that we take this measure because if anyone sends out the question paper on WhatsApp during the exam, there will be a lot of hue and cry and we don’t want to take any risk.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister, Assam

On Sunday, a police officer at the sub-inspector level was stationed in each testing location, assisted by additional officers.

Scams have occurred in the past during recruitment drives for jobs in the police department and state civil services, with cases of papers being leaked before tests.

  1. Tbh its actually very common in North East India. I spent 18 years of my life there and have experienced numerous moments when the government had cut down internet for hours due to government examinations
