An official said on Tuesday that homes in Sudan were still being destroyed by flash floods brought on by heavy rains, bringing the total number of fatalities since the beginning of the rainy season to 66. Authorities had earlier this week reported that since the beginning of the rains in June, at least 50 people had died.
At least 28 individuals were reported injured within the same time period, according to Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jalil Abdul-Rahim, spokesman for Sudan’s National Council for Civil Defence. According to him, about 24,000 homes and twenty government structures have been severely damaged or destroyed.
According to the government-run Humanitarian Aid Commission, 12 of Sudan’s 18 provinces have experienced flooding and severe rain that have affected approximately 136,000 people. The rainy season in Sudan typically begins in June and lasts through the end of September, with August and September seeing the worst flooding. During the rainy season last year, flood-related incidents resulted in the deaths of more than 80 persons.
