Punjab’s new pension scheme for MLAs

Chandigarh: The chief minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, said on Saturday that Governor Banwarilal Purohit has approved the “One MLA-One Pension” law, claiming that it will result in significant tax savings for the general population.

“I am very happy to inform Punjabis that the Governor has given his assent to ‘One MLA-One Pension’ Bill. The government has issued a notification. This will save a lot of tax for the public,”

About three months after the state cabinet approved the law, the governor gave his approval. Following the creation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration in Punjab, CM Mann announced the “one MLA-one pension” programme. In May, the Punjab cabinet cleared the way for its implementation.

The cabinet adopted an amendment to the Punjab State Legislature Members (Pension and Medical Facilities Regulation) Act, 1977 on May 2 during a meeting Mann presided over. The reform will allow former MLAs to receive a single pension regardless of the number of terms they spent in office.

The Punjab State Legislature Members (Pension and Medical Facilities Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2022 was approved by the Punjab Assembly on June 30.

Around 300 former MLAs in Punjab are reportedly receiving pensions, according to reports. The state government should save about Rs 19.53 crore a year as a result of this action. Previously separate payouts were handed to the MLAs depending on the number of terms they had served. This has now come to change via the new law.
