After 4 Months Of Struggle, Sri Lanka Protest Camp Cleared

According to Information, the protestors in Sri Lanka who deposed the previous government said on Wednesday that they were burning their primary protest location outside the president’s office after a crackdown on their leaders.

Cleared and cancelled four Court cases :

College students and communist groups asserted to be in charge of a group removing tents from the Galle Face beach promenade in the capital. They also abandoned four court challenges to a police order to leave the area, a spokeswoman said, claiming that their tents were causing problems for the nearby hotels.

Protests Began on April 9 :

Activists was seen tearing down the tents and other defences they had built to fight the government. On April 9, demonstrations protesting the biggest economic crisis in Sri Lankan history and the scarcity of supplies of food, fuel, and medicine began.

Their fury peaked on July 9 when tens of thousands of protesters flooded Colombo and besieged Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidential home, forcing him to leave and finally resign. After Rajapaksa fled to Singapore and announced his resignation, troops forced away protesters who had taken up residence in the palace as well as the prime Minister’s home and office.

Security personnel were charged with using excessive force to evict the demonstrators, injuring over 80 people who required hospitalisation. Since then, many activists have been held on suspicion of committing harm to state property.

A well-known union leader named Joseph Stalin was detained last week and accused of damaging property worth $90, as a result of global outrage, he was freed on bond on Monday. Rajapaksa’s successor, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has made a distinction between “protesters” and “rioters,” and he has vowed to take stern action against “any troublemakers”.

Money Found By the Protesters and surrendered :

Images posted to social media shortly after the protesters gained control of the castle showed people jumping on four-poster beds inside the expansive grounds and splashing around in the pool. But the demonstrators also turned over to the police some cash they had found in one of the rooms, amounting to about 17.5 million rupees that is around $46,000.
