Taiwan Starts Military Drills Stimulating Drills Against Chinese Attack

According to Reports, on Tuesday saw the start of live-fire artillery training by Taiwan’s military simulating an island defence against an attack following several days of significant Chinese military exercises.

As per the Taiwan’s Eighth Army Corps spokeswoman Lou Woei-jye, the drills got underway in the southern county of Pingtung immediately after 00:40 GMT with the launch of target flares and artillery. He predicted that the practice would finish at 1:30 GMT.

Taiwan constantly worries about being invaded by China, which sees Taiwan’s neighbour as a piece of its territory that must one day be reclaimed, possibly through force.

China this week held its largest-ever war games close to Taiwan in a fierce retaliation to  visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top US official to have visited the self-ruled island in decades.

The drills in Taipei will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, the army declared, and hundreds of soldiers and about 40 howitzers would be sent. Lou asserted on Monday that the exercises weren’t in response to China’s preparations, but rather were planned from the beginning.

The island periodically engages in military training exercises that imitate an invasion by the Chinese, and last month, as part of its major yearly exercises, the island acted out a “combined intercepting operation” to simulate fighting off attacks from the sea.
