According to information, an idol of Goddess Parvati that was missing from the Nadanapureshwarar Sivan Temple at Thandanthottam, Kumbakonam, fifty years ago has been discovered in New York, according to the Tamil Nadu Idol Wing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday. The idol was reportedly found in New York’s Bonhams Auction House, according to the CID.
Even though a complaint was submitted to the local police in 1971 and a FIR (First Information Report) was registered by the idol wing in reply to a K Vasu allegation in February 2019, the case has remained open.
It wasn’t until Inspector M. Chitra of the Idol Wing took over the case and started searching for Chola-era Parvati idols in overseas museums and auction houses that it was made public.
Before finding the idol at the Bonhams Auction house, she searched everywhere. The 52 cm tall copper-alloy idol comes from the Chola era, “which is about the 12th century, as per reports from the Idol Wing. It s worth US$ 212,575 in total roughly 1,68,26,143”.

The standing image of the goddess Parvati, or Uma as she is most commonly known in South India. Her crown, known as a karanda mukuta, is made up of rings that are placed on top of one another and eventually terminate in a lotus blossom.
The motifs from the crown are carried over on the necklace, armbands, girdle, and garments, accentuating the bronze texture. Director General of the Idol Wing CID Jayanth Murali asserts that his staff has produced the required papers to return the idol.
