India’s cherished men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stormed past the English pair of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. With a comfortable score line of 21-15, 21-13, they sealed a third gold out on court for India today, adding to the gold medals of PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen.
It was a good contest on paper and the English pair had beaten the experienced Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semi finals. The first game got off to an even start and there was not much to separate the two pairs as they went into the interval with the Indian duo leading 11-10. The second half of the first game proved to be much better for the Indians as they marched towards a 17-13 lead and eventually took the game 21-15.
The crowd started getting behind the Indians as chants grew louder heading into the second game. However, the English pair took the game to Rankireddy and Shetty as they coordinated well and looked more comfortable. A similar 11-10 score line at the interval in the second game saw the Indian pair narrowly hold the lead. The English pair of Lane and Vendy came out quite rusty as they saw the Indians go into a 5-point lead at 17-12.
Rankireddy and Shetty made no mistakes as they went on to seal the deal by winning the second game 21-13 to clinch the gold medal.
The Indian duo improved upon the silver medal that they won in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast.
