PV Sindhu, India’s sporting icon, added a Commonwealth Singles gold medal to her extensive collection on Monday with a dominant straight-game victory against Canada’s Michelle Li in the final.
In front of a raucous audience at the NEC venue, the world number seven from India upset her 13th ranked opponent 21-15, 21-13.
The 30-year-old needed to do something exceptional to win her first match against Sindhu in eight years, but the Indian didn’t give her a chance. Sindhu was clinical in her short game, capitalising on even the smallest of attacking situations.
Numerous Indian supporters were present in the arena for the gold medal match, thus the crowd supported Sindhu the entire time. After the game, the top shuttler congratulated the spectators and said they were responsible for her prized medal victory.
I had been waiting for this gold for a long time and finally I have got it. I am super happy. Thanks to the crowd, they made me win today,” said Sindhu after the final.
