Lightning Sparks Massive Fire In Cuba, 121 Injured And 17 Missing

According to Cuban authorities, a lightning-caused fire at an oil storage facility in the city of Matanzas erupted out of control, causing four explosions and flames to injure 121 people and leaving 17 firefighters missing.

As per reports from the Energy Department and Mines, firefighters and other professionals are presently battling the Matanzas Supertanker Base fire, which broke out during a thunderstorm. 800 or so people in the Dubrocq area who were closest to the fire were reportedly evacuated, according to the authorities.

U.S. Government’s help :

As stated by Carlos Fernández de Cosso, deputy foreign minister, the U.S. government initially offered technical aid to put out the fire. “Experts are dealing the proposal for the required cooperation”.

According to the government, it sought advice from overseas professionals with understanding of the oil sector in “friendly countries.”

A little while later, President Miguel Dáz-Canel thanked Mexico, Venezuela, Russia, Nicaragua, Argentina, and Chile for their offers of aid. The first support flights from Mexico and Venezuela were due to land at Matanzas Airport.

Smoke spreading beyond 100 kms :

They claimed that when a tank was struck by lightning and caught fire, another tank eventually caught fire as well.  As military helicopters hovered overhead dousing the fire with water, a huge column of black smoke erupted from the complex and spread westward more than 100 kilometres around 62 miles into Havana.

The Health Minister of Cuba stated that 121 individuals had been hurt, with five of them in severe condition. Deaths weren’t reported. The 17 individuals missing were the “firefighters who were in the nearby region trying to prevent the spread”.

I was at the gym when the first explosion happened. Local resident Adiel Gonzalez described “a column of smoke and horrific fire erupted through the air” to The Associated Press over the phone. “The city smelt strongly like sulphur”. Dubrocq is nearest the tank farm than the Versailles, but he said that numerous Versailles residents also decided to leave.
