According to Reports, Israel claimed to have shelled Gaza on Friday after days of unrest followed the detention of a major Palestinian militant in the occupied West Bank. At home, Israel then proclaimed a “special circumstance” as a result. A explosion could be heard in Gaza City as smoke was streaming out of a large building’s seventh floor. Who the strike was intended to affect was not immediately obvious.
Following the arrest of a key militant group member on Monday in the occupied West Bank, Israel earlier this week closed the routes around Gaza and deployed reinforcements to the border in anticipation of a retribution assault.
It was not immediately clear what Israel was aiming at or how far the scenario would deteriorate. Israel and Hamas have fought four major wars and a number of smaller skirmishes in the 15 years since Hamas ousted rival Palestinian forces.
While visiting communities near Gaza on Friday, Israeli Minister Of defense Benny Gantz stated, without going into greater detail, that officials were thinking about “actions that will remove the threat from this region”.
The assaults happened four days after Israel restricted the movement of its people who live near to the Gaza border by closing its two border crossings and citing security issues.
The actions come after two top members of the terrorist organisation Islamic Jihad, which has a sizable presence in Gaza, were detained in the occupied West Bank.
He proclaimed, “We do not seek out bloodshed, but if necessary, we will not hesitate to protect our civilians. To return daily life to normal in southern Israel, we shall work with both personal fortitude and external strength”.
