Justice UU Lalit Recommended To Be Next Chief Justice Of India

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was suggested by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana as his replacement on August 4. The replacement for the position is often considered to be the next-highest ranking judge after the current Chief Justice of India. Before leaving office, the CJI is required by convention to send a formal recommendation.

Justice Lalit, who will become Chief Justice of India on August 27, will hold the position for just over two months before stepping down to retire in November.

After passing the bar, Justice Lalit was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judge. He will be the second chief judge of India to be promoted directly from the bar to the bench.

Given that he had represented one of the disputing parties before being elevated to the position of judge, Justice Lalit has recused himself from hearing the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid case. Recently, a Justice Lalit-led panel denied Vijay Mallya’s request for a review of his conviction for contempt of court and sentenced the fugitive tycoon to jail.

Justice DY Chandrachud is the next in line to succeed him as Chief Justice of India once he retires in November.
