Sale Of Missile Defense Systems To UAE And Saudi Worth More Than 5 BILLION DOLLARS : U.S.

The sale of significant missile defence systems to United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia for more than $5 billion was announced by the US on Tuesday.

Two weeks after the US President Joe Biden spoke with the leaders of both countries in Saudi Arabia on a trip that was seen as crucial to healing strained relations with them, the decision was made public. Iran is also seen as a bigger threat by both nations than it once was.

Number of Missiles bought by Saudi and Value of Missiles :

The State Department said that Saudi Arabia had purchased Patriot MIM-104E missile systems, which can be used to knock down long-range oncoming ballistic and cruise missiles as well as assaulting aircraft.

The department estimates that the value of the missiles and associated equipment, manuals, and parts is $3.05 billion. Saudi Arabia is under risk as a result of recent rocket assaults from Houthi rebels in Yemen who have access to Iranian weaponry and technology.

The State Department claims that these missiles are used to defend Saudi Arabia’s borders against frequent cross-border Houthi strikes on vital infrastructure and civilian targets using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial systems.

To buy THAAD surface-to-air missile systems, the US will pay  UAE $2.25 billion separately. Recent Houthi rocket attacks also targeted the UAE, although they were partially thwarted by defences that were under the control of US troops stationed there.

As stated by the State Department, the anticipated sale will enable the UAE to better balance regional ballistic missile threats while reducing its reliance on US military forces.
