Bindyarani Devi secured silver medal for India in the Women’s 55 kg weight category on a successful day at the weightlifting arena for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
She lifted 116 kg in her final clean-and-jerk attempt to overtake England’s Fraer Morrow, finishing just 1 kg behind Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Dlarindye, who ended with a total of 203 kg, a Games record (198).
After managing a top effort of 86 kg in the snatch category and finishing behind the Nigerian at 92 kg and the English girl at 88 kg, Bindyarani Rani, who excels in the clean and jerk, fought back forcefully. She performed two fantastic lifts to make up the deficit.
She started the clean and jerk with 110 kg on the first try, in contrast to the Nigerian girl who was unable to lift the same amount of weight. Adijat lifted 110 kg in her second attempt, and she later added 1 kg to her total.
Bindyarani Devi couldn’t raise the 114 kg. The Indian weightlifter from Imphal fell to third as the English Weightlifter Morrow increased by 109 kg to a total of 198 kg.
In her final lift and jerk attempt, Bindyarani lifted 116 kg in an attempt to break the competition record, increase her weight to 202 kg, and win the silver medal. With this accomplishment, Bindyarani earned his first medal from the Commonwealth Games.
Sanket Sargar earned the silver medal in the men’s 55 kg category, Gururaja Poojary got the bronze medal in the men’s 61 kg category, and Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the women’s 49 kg category, giving India its first four medals from the weightlifting competition earlier on Saturday.
