Remembering Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam On His Death Anniversary

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, better known by his full name A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was an Indian scientist and politician who was instrumental in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programmes. He was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, India, and passed away on July 27, 2015, in Shillong.

On Why He Is Referred As The Missile Man Of India

He worked primarily at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he spent the majority of his career as a scientist and science administrator. He was also heavily involved in India’s efforts to develop military missiles and its civilian space programme. As a result of his contributions to the advancement of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology, he became renowned as the Missile Man of India.

Education

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960. He began working for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) after graduating from the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), an organisation that conducts military research in India (ISRO). Kalam’s affiliations extended beyond research institutions; they also included political organisations like the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Presidency

Between 2002 to 2007, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam presided over India. In his capacity as president, Kalam pushed for the expansion of the country’s nuclear weapons programme. In order to attain economic growth through technological advancement in India, Kalam also created a 20-year action plan.

Awards

Numerous honours were bestowed to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam by both the Indian government and the international society. His two most notable honours, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and the Bharat Ratna in 1997, were given in recognition of his achievements to engineering and research as well as his government service.

Death

On July 27, 2015, Kalam travelled to Shillong to give a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong on “Creating a Livable Planet Earth.” He felt some agony as he climbed the steps, but after a little pause, he was able to enter the theatre. He passed out just five minutes into his talk at roughly 6:35 p.m. IST. He was hurried in a serious condition to the adjacent Bethany Hospital; when he arrived, he had no pulse or other indications of life. Despite being admitted to the intensive care unit, Kalam passed away at 7:45 p.m. IST due to a sudden cardiac arrest.
