Sunak suggests closing all 30 Confucius Institutes in Britain to stop the development of Chinese influence through language and cultural programmes.
Additionally, he pledged to “eject the Chinese Communist Party from our colleges.” “by requiring institutions of higher learning to report foreign funding of more than £50,000 ($60,000) and by examining research collaborations.“
Sunak’s strong statement:
To counteract Chinese espionage, he would employ Britain’s domestic spy agency MI5, and he would work to create “NATO-style “international collaboration to counter Chinese cyberthreats.
Additionally, he would research the argument against allowing Chinese acquisitions of critical British assets, such as strategically important tech companies.
According to Sunak, China was “taking our technology and entering our colleges” at home, “propping up” Vladimir Putin overseas by purchasing Russian oil, and trying to bully neighbours like Taiwan.
Sunak against China’s debt policy:
He criticised China’s international “belt and road” initiative for “loading poor countries with unmanageable debt.”
China hawks in the Tory ranks will no doubt applaud Sunak’s stern words because they have frequently urged Johnson to be more assertive with Beijing.
It also demonstrates how desperately Sunak is attempting to catch up to Truss, who according to polls is clearly winning in the vital race for support from the 200,000 grassroots Tory members.
