Eldhose Paul of India finished 12th overall in the men’s triple jump to earn a spot in the 12-man final. Eldhose Paul, a member of Group A who qualified for the final with a personal best jump of 16.99 metres during the Federation Cup earlier this year, had a best jump of 16.68 metres to reach the Finals.
Paul is the first Indian to ever make it to the men’s triple jump final of the world championships. However, Abdulla Aboobacker from Group B and another Indian named Praveen Chithravel who was in Group A failed to advance. Chithravel had a best leap of 16.49m to claim 17th place in qualifying, while Aboobacker could only manage a 16.45m to finish 19th out of 28 competitors.
Both jumpers were significantly off their personal bests. Chithravel’s best is a 17.18m, set at the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai back in June, and Aboobacker’s best is a 17.19m, achieved in the Indian Grand Prix in Bhubaneswar in May. With a 17.16m effort, Pedro Pichardo, the champion for Tokyo 2020, took first place in the qualifier.
The men’s triple jump final qualification criteria at Oregon 2022 was set at 17.05 metres, which would require at least 12 elite participants. Five athletes went beyond the automatic qualification threshold, including the silver and bronze medalists from Tokyo, Zhu Yaming of China (17.08m), and Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso (17.15m).
