Indian Government Formulates To Cut Essential Medicines’ Cost

According to sources, the Indian government may shortly announce price reductions on a number of essential medications. In order to narrow down the list of medications scheduled to undergo trade margin rationalisation, health minister Mansukh Mandaviya is anticipated to meet with leading manufacturers and pharmaceutical lobby groups.

The minister is slated to meet the industry on July 26 on the subject of trade margin rationalisation on non-scheduled drugs

The price of essential medications will decrease as a result of the trading margin reform. Trade margins are the discrepancy between the maximum retail price for patients and the price to trade for producers

The Union Health Ministry is reportedly considering lowering the cost of medications used to treat diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.

The official was also cited as stating that conversations were taking place to see whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi might deliver the price reduction announcement on Independence Day.

The medication price authority, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), has been working on the TMR proposal for a number of months. The government set a limit on the trading margins for 42 specific non-scheduled anti-cancer medications in 2019.

The measure, according to Mandaviya’s report to the Lok Sabha, assisted in a reduction of up to 90% in the MRP for 526 brands of these medications.
