According to Information, Javelin thrower Annu Rani qualified for her second straight finals at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon on Thursday despite throwing 59.60 metres on her final attempt, significantly behind her season’s best. The spear thrower was about to give up after getting off to a bad start and hitting 55.35 metres on her second attempt, but she sent her spear just 40 centimetres shy of the 60-meter mark on her final effort to secure a spot in the finals.
She qualified for the finals as the “eighth-best performer overall across the two groups” after placing fifth in the Group B qualifying round.
Despite being unhappy that she didn’t break the 60-meter barrier, Annu Rani, a National record holder, will now have another chance to improve in the final on Saturday. Her personal best is 63.82, those who threw farther than 62.50 metres in the qualifying round were automatically entered into the championship round. In fact, only three could earn an automatic qualification.
In her third outing in the championship, “Annu Rani has advanced to the finals for the second time in a row. In the previous competition in 2019 in Doha, she had placed eighth in the finals with a best throw of 61.12 metres”. As a result of placing 10th in her qualification group, she was unable to go to the finals in London in 2017.
She had won gold at the Indian Open Javelin Throw Competition in Jamshedpur in May with a throw of 63.82 metres, shattering her own personal best.
While defending champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia advanced to the medal round as the fifth best performer with a best throw of 61.27m, season leader Maggie Malone of the USA, however was unable to advance to the finals after placing 12th in Group B and 22nd overall. All
She now has the chance to make amends in the finals on Saturday (6:50am IST). People of India will be cheering her to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championship.
