Syria officially severed its diplomatic ties with Ukraine on Wednesday in retaliation for Kiev’s equivalent action.
Russia’s strong ally Syria has been helped by it regarding President Bashar Assad gaining the upper hand in the fight there in September 2015 when it entered the fray.
Late in June, Damascus said that it will acknowledge the “independence and sovereignty” of Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are supported by Russia. This made Damascus the first nation to do so. As a result, Ukraine severed its connections with Syria.
According to the principle of reciprocity, the Syrian Arab Republic has decided to sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine, according to a statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry. It said that Ukraine had actually severed links with Syria in 2018 by refusing to renew the residence permits of Syrian diplomatic personnel in Kyiv, which prevented them from doing their jobs. The Syrian embassy had, according to the report, ceased operations “as a result of the unfriendly views of the Ukrainian administration” at the time.
The declaration was made on Wednesday, a day after the leaders of Russia, Iran, and Turkey met in Tehran for a summit conference. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad was in Tehran to meet with Iranian officials at the time.
