During their conversation, MK Stalin conveyed his worry for the situation in Sri Lanka and requested permission to provide aid to the island nation”, which is going through severe economic crisis.

Inflation, a severe lack of fuel and other basic supplies, and political unrest are all contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic and political crises. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 73, having left his home on July 9 after protestors barged in, and the Parliament Speaker eventually accepted his resignation. On July 20, the 225-members of the Parliament will vote to choose the new president.

“Government Offices and schools have been forced to close temporarily due to a lack of oil supplies”. The shortages have been exacerbated by decreased domestic agricultural output, a lack of foreign exchange reserves, and a decline in the value of local currencies.

The COVID-19 epidemic, which caused the vital tourism sector to collapse and the importation of gasoline and medical supplies with foreign currency, has made Sri Lanka’s numerous issues worse.

In addition to the “500,000 people who the World Bank estimates have slipped below the poverty line as a result of the pandemic”, the economic crisis will push people into poverty and hunger, some for the first time.

In light of the crisis in Sri Lanka, India has offered nearly USD 3.8 billion in support this year alone to help the island nation’s dire economic circumstances as part of its Neighborhood First strategy.
