Pilot dead in Portugal Wildfires; Inferno continues in Spain, France

While fighting wildfires in the northeastern region of Portugal, the pilot of a firefighting plane crashed to death on Friday. The raging inferno forced thousands of people out of their homes in France and Spain. The United Kingdom has also issued health warnings because of record high temperatures.

Portugal has been facing the worst fires this season. Temperatures in Spain peaked up to 46 degrees celsius, which is uncommon in the area. Spain’s heatwave caused more than 350 deaths.

Regional authorities attributed such alarming events to climate change.

“As long as greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced to zero, heatwaves will continue to intensify, become more frequent and last longer.”
