The coalition government of Italy is on the brink of collapse after the political party Five Star Movement pulled out of participating in a major confidence vote on Thursday. Mario Draghi, Italy’s Prime Minister attempted to resign but it was rejected by the President, Sergio Mattarella. Mattarella asked Draghi to reconsider his resignation and to address the parliament to clear political tensions. Draghi is adamant about gaining Five Star’s support to run the coalition successfully.

Italy has been running a coalition government since February 2021. Leader of Five Star, Giuseppe Conte, has expressed his distrust in Draghi and accused him of ignoring the soaring cost of living.
Luigi di Maio, former party leader, implicated Five-star in having larger, cynical plans to bring the incumbent coalition government down and gain sole support.
