Supreme Court Sentences Vijay Mallya To Jail

The Supreme Court today handed down a four-month prison term and a Rs. 2,000 fine to wanted liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya for  contempt of court conviction. In 2017, he was found guilty of contempt for giving his children $40 million against court restrictions. The court ordered that the fine be paid to the Supreme Court legal support organization within four weeks or else an additional two-month term will be added.

We must impose sufficient punishment in order to protect the majesty of justice, the justices said.

The top court in the nation also ruled that Vijay Mallya’s 40 million dollar transfer to his children was “void and inoperable,” and it commanded the recipients to repay the money, together with 8% interest, to the collection officer in four weeks. The properties owned by Vijay Mallya could be seized if the money is not reimbursed.

The collection officer can take appropriate procedures to recover the specified sum if this is not paid, and the indian government and other authorities should assist in that process, according to the court’s order.

UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, and PS Narasimha made up the panel that decided the case.

The hearing had been postponed several days to give Vijay Mallya a chance to show up, but the court ultimately chose to continue without him because of his failure to do so.

Senior attorney Jaideep Gupta was chosen to represent the court as an intervenor (friend of the judge) at the “in absentia” hearing.
