Finland and Sweden’s accession protocols are signed by NATO allies

On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at NATO Headquarters, the accession protocols for Finland and Sweden were signed by NATO ambassadors in the presence of the foreign ministers of those countries, Pekka Haavisto of Finland and Ann Linde of Sweden. “This is definitely a historic moment, for NATO, for our common security, for Finland, and for Sweden.” stated Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO.

Following the signing of a trilateral memorandum by Turkey, Finland, and Sweden, Allied leaders decided to ask Finland and Sweden to join NATO last week at the Madrid Summit. The ratification procedure has officially begun with the signing of the Accession Protocols.

As we face the biggest security crisis in decades, the Secretary General reaffirmed that NATO’s door is open to European democracies who are prepared and eager to contribute to our shared security. “With 32 nations around the table, we will be even stronger and our people will be even safer,” he said.
