A traditional beetroot soup was added to the United Nations cultural agency’s list of Ukrainian cultural assets that is protected, giving Ukraine victory over Russia in an old culinary battle.
Paris-based The rich, crimson soup borshch, which is packed with veggies, has been added to UNESCO’s list of cultural assets that require “urgent safeguarding” because to the threat Moscow’s invasion poses to the soup’s position as a part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
Oleksandr Tkachenko, the minister of culture for Ukraine, declared on Twitter: “Victory in the struggle for borshch is ours!”
Moscow criticised the dish’s recent protection as a protected Ukrainian cuisine and cited it as an illustration of “current Kyiv chauvinism.”
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, posted on Telegram that “our borshch does not need protection, but is subject to immediate and full destruction in a bowl.“
Residents in Kyiv, notably Tetiana, a 53-year-old civil servant, were hostile to this viewpoint.
She stated, “They must create their own culture rather than merely attempting to appropriate that of others.“
According to a UNESCO spokeswoman in Paris, Ukraine is now eligible to seek for special funding to support programmes promoting and safeguarding the dish. In the fifth month of a horrific full-scale war, Diana Kharanovych-Yavorska, a 35-year-old scientist in Kyiv eating a bowl of borsch on a bright afternoon, believed the decision constituted a victory over Moscow.
“For Ukraine, this is a victory, considering that Russia always wanted to steal our history, our culture, and our national dishes, Ukrainian borshch… can be different for every housewife, but it’s ours,” she said.
