Onboard PSLV C53 of ISRO, Dhruva Space’s satellite deployer underwent a successful test

The PSLV C53 of the Indian Space Research Organization carried the satellite orbital deployer (DSOD 1U), which was successfully tested and space qualified by Hyderabad-based Dhruva Space.

On June 30, at 6:02 p.m., the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, conducted the launch. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a public sector enterprise of the Indian government and the commercial branch of ISRO, launched PSLV-C53 on its second commercial mission.

When a launch occurs, CubeSats—nano satellites with dimensions of 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm—sit inside mechanical cases called satellite orbital deployers. When an asset is considered to be space qualified, it is understood that it has complied with all necessary technical and design specifications to operate in space.

Dhruva Space can now proceed with its satellite missions, Thybolt-1 and Thybolt-2, which would be carried by the PSLV C54 mission, thanks to the successful testing of its satellite deployers. Dhruva Space created technologies for its satellite orbital deployer that were locally built to ensure a smooth launch and steady deployment. This made it compatible with the PSLV C53.

Sanjay Nekkanti, CEO of Dhruva Space Private Limited, acknowledged the support the startup received for the launch from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (In-Space), saying, “We look forward to supporting our international clients with CubeSat Deployers, Integration, and Launch Services.”

Dhruva Space recently became one of the first companies to get authorization from the recently formed In-Space, the nodal agency under the Department of Space that authorises and controls the space activities of commercial businesses.
