The Second Quarter of National Lok Adalat of 2022, held in June end. In nine states witnessed the disposal of over 20 lakh cases. It was held in seven states and 2 Union Territories
Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. The National Lok Adalat patronaged National Legal Service Authority also under the direction of the Executive Chairman of NALSA Hon’ble Mr. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of Supreme Court.
The successive figures for this second quarter of Lok Adalat held in May and June 2022 in all the States and Union Territories is 95,75,743 including 28,71,919 lacs pending and 67,03,824 lacs pre-litigation cases. The total value of the settlement amount is Rs. 9413.62 crores.
What does National Lok Adalat Do?
Lok Adalats have been statutory authority under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. NALSA together with other Legal Services Institutions controls Lok Adalats. Lok Adalat is one of the Alternative Dispute Redressal (ADR) Act 1996 mechanisms, it is a forum where pending cases in the court of law or at the pre-litigation stage are settled amicably.
There is no court fee paid when a matter is filed in a Lok Adalat. If a matter pending in the court is referred to the Lok Adalat and is settled subsequently, the court fee paid in the court on the complaints/petition is also refunded back to the parties. Members of Lok Adalat have the role of statutory conciliators only and do not have any judicial role. therefore, they can only persuade the parties to come to an end of negotiation for settling the dispute outside the court and shall not pressurize or constrain any of the parties to compromise or settle cases directly or indirectly. The Lok Adalat shall decide on the basis of the compromise or settlement between the parties.
