On Tuesday, there may be a formal announcement.
Morgan led England to the World Cup title in 2019 and the top spot in the one-day and Twenty20 rankings.
The 35-year-old, who took over the T20 team in 2012 and the one-day team in 2014, has recently battled with his fitness and form, and Jos Buttler is the favourite to succeed him. The T20 World Cup in Australia starts in October, and England and India will play each other in a three-match T20 series beginning on July 7. With 6,957 and 2,458 runs, respectively, Morgan leads England in both one-day and T20 runs scored.
He has played in 225 ODIs and 115 T20s, both records for England.
Moeen Ali, an all-rounder for England, said of him, “He’s done a wonderful job. It’s unfortunate. Understanding the other side without him is strange. It is unfortunate, but you have to accept that things change. At the same time, I’m not shocked because he is a really unselfish person and likely has the team’s best interests in mind. We’ve been so strong over the years, so he probably believes that his role is finished and that Jos, or whoever the captain will be, has had enough time to establish himself.”
England’s disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign, in which they were eliminated in the first round, was overseen by Morgan after Alastair Cook stepped down as ODI captain. However, he adopted a fresh, offensive strategy that enabled England to beat the record for the highest one-day total three times.
They most recently accomplished that mark when they scored 498-4 against the Netherlands last week, although Morgan had two ducks in the series and missed the third ODI due to a groyne injury.
In his last 26 white-ball innings for England, he has only reached the halfway point once.
“It is so difficult to do, but to change the mindset of an entire nation and the way they play cricket is a big achievement,” Moeen added.
