The police detained the suspect on Wednesday after a video showing a 24-year-old man stabbing his sister repeatedly outside of their home in Varnama, Gujarat’s Vadodara district, viral on social media. After being released from the hospital where he was receiving treatment after being hurt in the incident that happened last week, the accused, a student of forensic science at a college in Vadodara, was detained, according to the police.
As the accused is thought to be mentally ill, the accused has been subjected to a psychiatric assessment, according to Inspector BN Gohil of the Varnama police station. The incident happened on June 18; the viral video shows the accused forcing his sister to the ground before repeatedly stabbing her as she struggled to get away. He assaulted his mother first, then his sister.
Inspector Gohil stated that while the mother of the accused had sustained minor wounds, his sister was still being treated for knife wounds in a hospital even though there was no internal organ damage. He said that the accused had been agitated over money concerns for the previous several days and had attacked his family over a marital dispute.
The inspector also added that he was booked under section 326 of the IPC for causing grievous hurt and remarked,
We arrested the accused as soon as he was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. He stabbed his sister with a knife several times, but luckily she has not suffered serious injuries.
In the footage, the man is also seen wielding his knife and threatening others who attempted to help his sister.
