Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha has been named by opposition groups as their presidential contender. Sinha resigned from the TMC earlier today, saying, “Now is the time for a broader national cause.” On Monday, Gopal Krishna Gandhi became the third individual to abandon his candidacy as a possible presidential contender.
Yashwant Sinha, a former union minister, wrote a tweet on Tuesday morning that could fuel rumours that he could run for president as the opposition’s candidate in the July 18 election. “I owe Mamata ji a debt of gratitude for the honour and status she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now is the time for me to step aside from the party in order to strive for greater opposition unity for a wider national cause. The 84-year-old leader tweeted, “I am confident she approves of the step.”
Sinha stated that he did not wish to elaborate on his tweet. According to sources, he will most likely be designated the opposition’s choice.
Yashwant Sinha has been the vice president of the Trinamool Congress and has also served as India’s finance and foreign minister. In 2018, he left the BJP.
His tweet comes as opposition leaders gather at Sharad Pawar’s residence on Tuesday to discuss the presidential election, a day after West Bengal’s ex-governor and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, refused to be nominated. Pawar and Farooq Abdullah, the patriarch of the National Conference, had already turned down the invitations.
